Netflix Original: Kingdom

Another interesting Netflix original series has came up yesterday on 25th of January 2019, written by Kim Eun Hee, a writer who wrote one of my all time favorite Korean Drama, Signal. This time the she is back with a zombie stories with a Joseon period background, and one of the reason she choose to cooperate with Netflix this time is due to some gruesome scene which is impossible to be put on air if they broadcast it through the Korean broadcasting system, due to many restriction on what can and what can’t be put on the show.

Aside from the writer who brings my anticipation to the drama, the actors and actresses being cast for the series is also another reason for my anticipation to this drama. It is reported that at first they offered the main role to Song Joong Ki, before he rejected it and they turned to Joo Ji Hoon to take over the role. I must say I was super glad that Song Joong Ki declined the offer, because in my opinion he really lacks of acting skill, he got nothing aside from his handsome face. Joo Ji Hoon has a lot more to offer, so I was really glad that the main role fell to Joo Ji Hoon’s hand. Then you also have the talented Bae Doo Na, which is can’t be considered pretty in Korean standard, but has a really great acting skill. And they have Ryu Seung Ryong acting as the main antagonist. AND they make a really great trailer for the series.

Once I started the series, I can’t stop and finish off all 6 episodes in one time. The series has a right combination of tension, scary atmosphere, and a slight funny scene here and there, which helps you to ease the tenseness you feel after certain scenes. Joo Ji Hoon also portrays the character very well, unlike the normal main character which normally gives an heroic and fearless vibe, Joo Ji Hoon gives out a very human-like character. Though he has the heart to be different and want to protect his people, he can also be afraid sometimes just like any other people in the series who have to face the scary zombies. Like there’s this scene where he said “I’m more afraid to be left alone,” or by portraying how shock he was that he couldn’t even think or move when seeing everyone around him is fighting with the zombies.

Meanwhile Bae Doo Na also give a very good acting from one episodes to another. Her expression on her face just say it all. Ryu Seung Ryong, the veteran actor who acts as the main antagonist also do very well by being a mean guy in the series. He gives out that scary and cold blood vibe around him, and I must say he’s being quite charismatic in the series. And not to mention the other supporting actors in the series also put a lot of effort, making this series not even a little bit feel awkward, even it’s telling a stories about zombies in Joseon period, which is not common I must say.

Overall the first season of this Netflix original is definitely well made and makes you don’t want to stop once you started. The ending is an open ending just like any other western series, since the production team said that there will be a second season to this series. Yeah! There’s no official date being released yet, but since the second series will start filming at around February and will wrap up around June, so everyone guessing the second series will be ready to be streamed at around early next year.
